Surf
fishing
along the beaches of Hatteras is like no other anywhere else in the
world. Annually in September, the Hatteras Village Civic
Association
sponsors the Hatteras Villiage Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament
with 70 teams participating. The event is open to anyone
interested in a fun filled weekend.

Rules and
Regulations
- A
team shall
consist of not more than 6 anglers.
- One
member of the
team shall act as CAPTAIN and be responsible for correct scoring
of fish.
Formal
protests can only be filed by the team captain.
- No
changes will be
allowed to the score sheet once the team captain has signed it. So
make
sure it is
correct before you sign it.
- Float
rigs,
balloons, plastic bags, etc., will not be allowed. No cast nets to be
used during session
times.
- Chumming
or chum
pots at any time during the two days are not permitted. Teams doing
so will
be
disqualified.
- Rods
and reels —
UNRESTRICTED; Lines — UNRESTRICTED; Sinkers —UNRESTRICTED.
- Not
more than two hooks are allowed on one line at any time with
the
exception of artificial lures with
hooks according to manufacturer’s specifications.
- All
tournament fish
must be caught on hook or lure and landed on the beach. Any fish
may be
gaffed by any
member of the team providing the gaff is not more than 5 feet in
length.
- No
lines are
permitted to be in the water prior to the starting signal and must be
reeled in
at the stopping
signal. All fish hooked prior to the stopping signal will be scored
when
beached.
- Any
fish beached
which becomes hooked on loose line will not be scored.
- Any
fish hooked
outside the boundaries of the team’s designated position will not be
scored.
- Fish
shall be
measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail. The largest
fish will
be determined by
length.
- Winning
teams shall
be determined by the total number of points scored by the team.
- In
case of a tie in
points, the winner shall then be determined by the total number of
fish
caught. If a tie
still exists, the winner will be determined by a flip of a coin by the
chief
judge.
- Any
team with
questionable fish, determined so by the decision of the chief judge,
will be
disqualified from
the competition.
- NOTE:
The rules
governing this tournament were compiled not for the purpose of telling
team
members what
they should or should not do but to try to establish a set of rules that
would be
fair to all
anglers and to give all a chance to win on equal footing.
- The
HATTERAS
VILLAGE CIVIC ASSOCIATION trusts that the rules will be accepted in
good
faith by all
registered anglers.
