The Henry and Christina Stowe House ca. 1860 |

the first floor of the main section of this house is believed to date to
the mid-nineteenth century. The house was substantially remodeled ca.
1890-1910 when the one story structure became two stories with a detached
kitchen. Like many Hatteras houses, holes were bored in the flooring
to allow tide water to easily enter and leave the structure in time of storms.
This prevented the house from floating off its foundation.
