| Prior to Hurricane Isabel in 2003, Durant Station was the only Lifesaving Station in Hatteras Village. It was completely distroyed by the ocean during Hurricane Isabel. Only the cupola was found after the storm. Because of its historical significance, it remains on this website as a reminder of its importance to the life of Hatteras Village. |
Of the first 10 Lifesaving Stations built on Hatteras between 1874 and 1904, Durant Station in Hatteras village was the only survivor until Hurricane Isabel in 2003.. |
