Across Hwy 12,  just south of the Civic Center, is the former location of Durant Station, one of the ten original lifesaving stations on Hatteras Island.  It was destroyed in 2003 by Hurricane Isabel.  The left photo is what Durant Station looked like just prior to the hurricane.  The right photo shows what the property looks like today.  Soon construction will begin on a 33 unit condo complex.
