Seafood Tent

Seafood is the reason we are here.  Our water men harvest an enormous variety of seafood from the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound.  Some stays here and you will find it in our seafood markets and restaurants but much makes its way to big wholesale fish markets in major cities from where is bought and shipped around the country and the world.

The freshness and flavor of our seafood inspires chefs and home cooks alike.  During Day at the Docks there are several small group cooking demos where you can get close and talk to the cooks.  Two brilliant chefs appear on the stage for the Seafood Throwdown in the afternoon.

In 2014, we took seafood to its' own tent.  You can check the demonstration schedule and join us for the Seafood Throwdown (time TBA).  Once again in 2015, Conetoe Family Life Center will be joining us with their students and donating produce from their farm for use in the Seafood Throwdown.

Seafood Throwdown 2015

2 Local Chefs, 1 Local Fish

Chefs from two popular Outer Banks restaurants will display their seafood cooking skills at the 4th annual Day at the Docks Seafood Throwdown at 12 noon on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

Guests will see Taylor Rawl from The Mad Crabber Restaurant in Avon and Eduardo Chavez from Eduardo’s Taco Stand in Ocracoke prepare dishes using a local seafood ingredient that will be revealed only when the event gets underway.   The chefs will have one hour to create dishes that will be scored on taste, use of the whole fish, originality and presentation.

Rawl says the tremendous variety of available local seafood drew her to Hatteras Island after studying culinary arts in Connecticut and gaining experience cooking in different towns along the East Coast.  Her creativity in the kitchen is driven by an appreciation for working with local ingredients whether she is preparing simple or extravagant dishes.   To learn more about Rawl’s work, visit https://www.facebook.com/themadcrabber .

Chavez describes his love of good food prepared creatively with locally sourced seafood and organic produce as a “beautiful gratitude.”  He credits his mother for his deep appreciation of the authentic, regional cuisine of Mexico and his love of working with a variety of flavors and aromas for the passion and innovation he brings to the dishes he creates.  Visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/Eduardos-Taco-Stand/113773002028584 to learn more.

Jeffrey’s Seafood in Hatteras will supply the secret seafood ingredient and the Conetoe Family Life Center in Edgecombe County will supply produce.

Throwdown judges in 2015 are Richard Joyner, Ryan Speckman, and Jack Thigpen.

A native of Pitt County, Reverend Richard Joyner is passionate about sharing the health benefits of fresh food, local produce, and healthy cooking habits with folks throughout Eastern North Carolina. As the founder of the Conetoe Family Life Center, he oversees five youth-led, youth-planned community garden spaces, including a 25-acre lot that features two greenhouses and a “bee bus,” that gives low-income and at-risk families access to free, fresh produce, honey, exercise, and educational opportunities. Surplus produce is sold at farmers’ markets throughout the region and at Day at the Docks.  Proceeds from all sales support higher education scholarships for local children.  To learn about Conetoe  connection to Hatteras, visit http://islandfreepress.org/2015Archives/06.03.2015-TheHatterasConetoeConnectionExchangingHealthyFoodAnCultureWITHSLIDESHOW.html .
